Music Monday: I Like Big Bibles and Better Musicians

Yes, yes, I know...it's Monday, and the music is late. I ran across this in my Amusements folder tonight, as I was cleaning it out. Thought I would share. Remember, "Baby Got Back" by Sir-Mix-A-Lot? A bit risque, a lot of funny, right? And these days, it would seem downright tame in the hip hop/rap arena. Well, this guy did a Christian version of it...that's right, I said a Christian version. Now, I love good Christian rock, but I am not sure this qualifies. I suppose it has its place. Check it out and see what you think.

Personally, I prefer Third Day. What a great band! And they even let you snarf their music free on MP3! But they are so great I buy their stuff. Seriously, if you like Christian rock with an edge (and even if you don't, but liked Creed or Pearl Jam or Switchfoot) then you have to try this music.

Another artist I have newly discovered is Todd Agnew. He also has a My Space page here where you can hear the songs, including My Jesus.

The best way to describe him is a modern day Keith Green with a bit of Scott Stapp (lead singer from Creed) thrown in. I was in the car the other day and was actually moved to tears by a song I heard. It was Todd Agnew, and I had to come home and buy it on iTunes.

Like Keith, Todd knows how to send a wake up call. You may feel challenged, you may feel angry, but you will feel. This is no ordinary Christian rock. When was the last time you heard the word "slut" in a Christian song? This is the real deal.

He said exactly what I have been thinking, and at the risk of getting political (as if I wouldn't take that risk!) I think anyone who claims to be a follower of Jesus Christ needs to hear it. So I present the lyrics.

My Jesus

Which Jesus do you follow?
Which Jesus do you serve?
If Ephesians says to imitate Christ
Then why do you look so much like the world?

Cause my Jesus bled and died
He spent His time with thieves and liars
He loved the poor and accosted the arrogant
So which one do you want to be?

Blessed are the poor in spirit
Or do we pray to be blessed with the wealth of this land
Blessed are they that hunger and thirst for righteousness
Or do we ache for another taste of this world of shifting sand

Cause my Jesus bled and died for my sins
He spent His time with thieves and sluts and liars
He loved the poor and accosted the rich
So which one do you want to be?

Who is this that you follow
This picture of the American dream
If Jesus was here would you walk right by on the other side or fall down and worship
at His holy feet

Pretty blue eyes and curly brown hair and a clear complexion
Is how you see Him as He dies for Your sins
But the Word says He was battered and scarred
Or did you miss that part
Sometimes I doubt we'd recognize Him

Cause my Jesus bled and died
He spent His time with thieves and the least of these
He loved the poor and accosted the comfortable
So which one do you want to be?

Cause my Jesus would never be accepted in my church
The blood and dirt on His feet would stain the carpet
But He reaches for the hurting and despised the proud
I think He'd prefer Beale St. to the stained glass crowd
And I know that He can hear me if I cry out loud

I want to be like my Jesus!
I want to be like my Jesus!

Not a posterchild for American prosperity, but like my Jesus
You see I'm tired of living for success and popularity
I want to be like my Jesus but I'm not sure what that means to be like You Jesus
Cause You said to live like You, love like You but then You died for me
Can I be like You Jesus?
I want to be like my Jesus

Many believe that Gandhi was a moral man, as do I. And so, because I have great respect for him, I will quote him:

"I like your Christ, I do not like your Christians. Your Christians are so unlike your Christ."
Something to think about. is it any wonder the world hates people who claim to be Christians?

T,who still keeps trying to follow Jesus and pretty much believes that Gandhi was pretty close to the truth in what he said

Oh hello, I see Cheryl has been here also - I've visted Mad Baggage many times. It's funny how you can learn fragments about someone through our apparently random browsing.

I heard the music of Third Day only a couple of weeks past at an excellent service for Good Friday. They are welcome break from the 80s-esque christiana that we usually get so much of.

You write an excellent site, you are now in my bookmarks (for what little honour that is worth).

WOW - I love your taste in music! I just found a ton of new Christian music for my iPod. I'll share more later. My contacts are blurry. Can't type :)
